What is Relationship Counselling?

Many people want to have a satisfying relationship with a partner and can be confused and disappointed when things go wrong. At times couples can lose sight of why they are together.

Couples counselling provides a safe and confidential space to explore the current problems that partners are facing. Feelings can be expressed and thought given to understand both the individual’s perspective and how this also affects the couple’s interaction. From this, it can help a couple to think about things differently and begin to make changes that can seem so daunting.

Couples can come at particular times of crisis or in order to improve an ongoing relationship. I see couples of different backgrounds, sexual orientation and marital status.

Common issues include:

  • Poor communication
  • Unmanageable conflict
  • Affairs
  • Uncertainty about commitment
  • Life transitions
  • Starting a family
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Effects of illness
  • Issues relating to separation and divorce
  • Bereavement
  • Family dilemmas
  • Fertility issues

Couples counselling is also suitable for couples who are going through separation and divorce. It can be helpful to try to understand what may have contributed to the breakdown in the relationship, in order to begin to let go of the hurts and resentments going forward.

I suggest an initial assessment and if ongoing counselling is appropriate, it is usually on a weekly basis. Counselling can be for a fixed number of sessions or can take place over a longer period of time. This is decided in conjunction with the couple at the first session.
