What is Psychosexual Therapy?

Psychosexual Therapy is the new name for Sex Therapy. This recognises the part that the mind plays in sexual functioning. As human beings our sexual feelings and relationships are affected not only by our bodies, but by our thoughts and feelings. Sex therapy acknowledges the complex unity of mind and body and brings them together.

In treating sexual problems I use an integrative approach. Therapy provides a safe and confidential space to talk and understand more about the issues. I may give the individual or couple specific behavioural tasks or exercises to do at home, where appropriate. This is always done at a pace that suits the client.

At an initial assessment session it can be clarified whether the sexual problem is a long standing one or related to a recent event. Sexual difficulties also need to be assessed by a GP to exclude medical factors.

I work both with same sex and heterosexual clients.

Common issues include:

  • Lack of sexual desire
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • No orgasm (anorgasmia)
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Delayed ejaculation
  • Penetration difficulties
  • Vaginismus
  • Pain on intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Sexual addiction
  • Infrequent sex

I suggest an initial assessment and if ongoing therapy is appropriate, it is usually on a weekly basis. Therapy can be for a fixed number of sessions or can take place over a longer period of time. This is decided in conjunction with the individual or couple at the first session.
